Learning the smell of home.

Coho salmon are exposed to beta-phenylethyl (PEA) at the parr stage, the smolt stage, or never (control).

They are then given a choice between PEA odor or no odor in a two-arm maze.

Only salmon in the smolt stage learned to associate PEA ("imprint") with their stream.
