Play and brain development.

Cerebellar synaptogenesis ( formation of synapses in the cerebellum ) is correlated with the ontogeny (development) of play in juvenile mice.

The cerebellum is involved in coordination of muscular movement, and locomotor play may be critical for synapse formation that promotes coordinated movement.

Playing may also promote learning in humans, especially in early childhood.
