Mate choice: sexual imprinting. Lesser snow geese come in two color morphs (blue and white) and prefer to mate with same-colored individuals.

Cross-fostering experiments show that birds whose adopted parents were the same color have a stronger preference for same-colored mates than did individuals whose adopted parents were a different color.

Such imprinting usually are learned at a young age, and can be overridden in adults.
