Unrelated queens of the desert seed harvester ant Messor pergandei co-found a nest and exhibit between-groups cooperation to establish a large colony of workers.

After workers emerge (eclosion), however, within-group selection favors noncooperatiion (since cooperators pay a cost not born by noncooperators); queens then fight to gain control of the colony.
