Phylogeny and cooperative breeding.

Phylogenetic analysis can reveal evolution of traits such as cooperative breeding among members of a taxon inherited from a common ancestor.

The solid line represents the expected number of cooperator species per passerine genus based on genus size.

In group 1, cooperative breeding is overrepresented.

In group 2, cooperative breeding is underrepresented: the trait has been lost through evolutiuon.
