Three modes of cultural transmission.

• In horizontal transmission, an individual learns from peers.
  
  
  
  
  
  
  
  
• In oblique transmission, young individuals learn from adults who are not their parents.

Note that cultural transmission can produce maladaptive, as well as adaptive behavior.
