Role reversal. In play fighting between squirrel monkeys, sometimes an older individual allows a juvenile to play the dominant role. Such role reversal, as well as self-handicapping (losing a contest on purpose), requires the development of cognitive skills in recognizing play behavior, and allows each to experience both the subordinate (loser) and dominant (winner) roles.
